A princess-cut diamond is a square brilliant-cut stone. The design originates from the inverted pyramid shape of an uncut diamond, and the finished design has its origins in the earlier ‘French’ cut diamond. Its technical classification is a 'square modified brilliant' and was given the name 'princess cut' in the 1960s, making it one of the more recent diamond shapes. When you look down onto a princess-cut diamond, the facets form an X. The number of chevrons will determine the final look of a gem.
Princess cut diamond rings are incredibly desirable. They're second only to a brilliant round diamond in popularity. They're also slightly more affordable than a brilliant round because they retain around 80% of the rough diamond, compared to a round brilliant that keeps just 50%. That makes them easier to cut and so less time consuming to produce. Princess diamond rings look incredible, with plenty of fire in the heart of the gem – just the right choice for a bride-to-be. With so many different combinations to choose from, a princess ring is a gorgeous alternative to the traditional round brilliant-cut option.

A princess-cut diamond ring isn’t just for future brides. This enchanting gem has been used as a gift for decades and is just as appropriate for a birthday, graduation present, or even an exceptional Mother's Day token. From encrusted bands with a princess-cut gem as the centrepiece to contemporary designs that use three princess-cut gems together, there is a wealth of styles for all ages.
Princess-cut rings come in a wide range of metals. You can't go wrong with either 9k or 18k yellow gold if you love that traditional look. The warmth of rose gold gives any gem a charming peachy hue, while the clarity of white gold appears to make the stone look bigger than it really is. Why not go for a palladium 950 or platinum 950 option for a modern twist on a traditional theme? Both are also hypoallergenic metals, so palladium or platinum are great alternatives if you're sensitive to gold or the alloys mixed with rose or white gold.
