HALLMARKS
It is not possible by looking or touching an item of jewellery, to tell the metal purity of it. For this reason the 1973 Hallmarking Act makes it unlawful to sell precious metals over a certain weight without the piece carrying a hallmark.
- Gold pieces weighing more than 1 gram must be hallmarked.
- Platinum pieces weighing more than 0.5 grams must be hallmarked.
- Palladium pieces weighing more than 1 gram must be hallmarked.
